چکیده

Preliminary to a study of various pathological thyroid states, it was considered necessary to investigate first the carbohydrate metabolism of the normal gland. Also, it was thought that the information gained regarding the function and energetics of the normal gland might eventually provide an insight into the mechanism of formation of the hormone, thyroxine. Although numerous studies related to thyroid function have appeared in the literature, little is known of the pattern of carbohydrate utilization in this gland. Values for oxygen consumption (1) and the influence of goitrogenic and related compounds on the cytochrome oxidase activity of surviving thyroid slices (2) have been reported. That several enzyme systems involved in carbohydrate metabolism are present in the thyroid gland has been demonstrated by means of chemocytological procedures (3). Because of the important Ale of the thyroid gland in regulating the rate of cellular metabolism, considerable effort in the past has been spent in studying the effects of thyroxine separately and in conjunction with the thyrotropic hormone of the pituitary gland in biological oxidations. Within the large volume of data that have accumulated, varying results have been reported as to the capacity of thyroxine (4-9) and thyrotropic hormone (10-12) to exert a stimulative effect when added to isolated surviving tissues. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the carbohydrate metabolism of the normal thyroid gland and to reexamine the hormonal effect on respiration.

Investigation of heavy trace elements in neoplastic and non-neoplastic human thyroid tissue: A study by proton-induced X-ray emissions.

Background: Within the context of developing techniques to facilitate the diagnosis of the thyroid diseases, the elemental composition of pathological thyroid tissue (neoplastic and non-neoplastic) was investigated by proton induced X-ray emission. The PIXE has been widely used as a sensitive technique for trace elemental analysis in both biological and medical fields. Materials and Methods: Th...

Strategies towards Improved Feed Efficiency in Pigs Comprise Molecular Shifts in Hepatic Lipid and Carbohydrate Metabolism

Due to the central role of liver tissue in partitioning and metabolizing of nutrients, molecular liver-specific alterations are of considerable interest to characterize an efficient conversion and usage of feed in livestock. To deduce tissue-specific and systemic effects on nutrient metabolism and feed efficiency (FE) twenty-four animals with extreme phenotypes regarding residual feed intake (R...

Design and Production of Two-Piece Thyroid-Neck Phantom by the Concurrent Use of Epoxy Resin and Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) Soft Tissue Equivalent Materials

The aim of this report is to present a new two-piece thyroid-neck phantom produced by the concurrent use of epoxy resin and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA: plexiglass) soft tissue equivalent materials. Accordingly, mass attenuation coefficients of the epoxy resin and the plexiglass compounds were obtained from simulation (NIST XCOM 3.1) and measurements (practical dosimetry) and compared to th...

Accelerating embryonic growth during incubation following prolonged egg storage. 2. Embryonic growth and metabolism.

The hypothesis was proposed that the improved embryonic livability observed when higher incubation temperatures were imposed on eggs stored for 15 d prior to setting might have basis in energy metabolism. To test the hypothesis, fertilized turkey eggs were incubated either for the first 2 wk of development (experiment 1) or only the first week of development (experiment 2) at 37.8 degrees C com...

Protective effects of Cornus Mas fruit extract on methotrexate-induced alterations in mice testicular tissue: Evidences for histochemical and histomorphometrical changes in an animal model study

Methotrexate (MTX) as a chemotherapeutic agent, has adverse effects on reproductive organs by enhancing oxidative stress. In this study, the protective effects of Cornus mas fruit extract (CMFE) against MTX side effects were evaluated. Forty-eight mature male NMRI mice were divided into six groups: group 1 (control) received 0.10 mL per day of normal saline intraperitoneally (IP), grou...
